Five Unfamiliar Picture Books Your Kids Will Love

Do you and your kids ever find yourselves in a reading rut? This happens to me all the time. It’s so easy to reach for the same few picture books over and over again. And while rereading books with kids is actually beneficial, it’s nice to have some different titles to refresh family reading time.

Luckily, we have great libraries on the Seacoast with wonderful suggestions to spice up storytime. A friendly librarian helped me come up with some unfamiliar picture books to bring home and enjoy. These book suggestions are guaranteed to be instant hits with your kids.

Five Unfamiliar Picture Books Your Kids Will Love

Nibbles, written by Emma Yarlett

This is a story about a book monster who loves nibbling (you guessed it) books! Sneaky little Nibbles is constantly escaping his cage and nibbling his way into other people’s stories. Your kids will laugh out loud when Nibbles eats his way into Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk, and more. This interactive book has flaps to lift and Nibbles to search for. Your whole family will love this adorable and clever book.

The Neighbors, written by Einstein Tsarfati

The Neighbors is a huge hit at my house and we have even purchased a copy of our own. Your readers will follow along as a little girl climbs seven flights of stairs to her apartment, imagining that amazing things are behind each door she passes. Beautiful illustrations of underwater worlds, families of musicians, and circus performers will amaze your readers. The twist at the end of the story will make them smile.

The Curious Case of the Missing Mammoth, written by Ellie Hattie

It’s midnight at the museum and everything has come to life! A wooly mammoth named Timothy is on the hunt for his little brother, Teddy, who is on the loose and causing mischief. With the help of a boy named Oscar, the pair has one hour to find Teddy before everything in the museum returns to normal. A blend of fiction and nonfiction, this interactive book shares fascinating facts about dinosaurs, endangered species, ocean creatures, knights, and airplanes.

There’s an Alligator Under My Bed, written by Mercer Mayer

There’s an Alligator Under My Bed is a delight book about a boy convinced there is an alligator living under his bed. His parents don’t believe him, so he decides to take matters into his own hands. Written by the author of the Little Critter series, this book is sure to become a beloved favorite.

Story Path, written by Madalena Matoso

Story Path will remind you of the Choose Your Own Adventure books you may have read in the 80s and 90s – except in picture book form. This wonderful book lets kids create their own story by selecting different pictures on each page. Every time you read this book, your kids can create a brand new tale depending on the path they select. Story Path will spark creativity and imagination in your little ones.

Which picture books do your kids love that might be new to others?

I’m a Maine native and after a long stretch of time living in Chicago, I feel lucky to again call the Seacoast my home. I currently live in Kennebunk with my husband, two sons, and a spaniel mix who truly believes he is a furry big brother to our boys. I hold a Master of Education degree from the University of Maine and as a certified English and Special Education teacher, a passion of mine has always been helping students and connecting them to reading and writing. Free time is best spent in the sunshine with family and friends, curled up with a good book, eating my husband’s incredible cooking, or creatively writing for the kids in my life. Being a mom is the most challenging and amazing job I’ve ever had. I wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world.
