I love having a wreath on my front door but every time the warm weather rolls around, I am at a loss at what to hang. This spring I decided to make my own succulent wreath. Through the holidays its a no-brainer to hang an evergreen wreath on the door with a big old bow on it, but I hesitate to hang fake or dried flowers up when summer comes. While discussing this conundrum with my hair stylist {because I pretty much tell her everything}, she suggested a living wreath. It was the perfect solution, so I did a little research and got to work!
What you need to make a succulent wreath:
- Living wreath round
- Topiary pins {comes with the wreath linked above}
- Various succulents – got all my succulents from here and here
- Scissors/something to make a hole in the moss
What you do:
1. Prep. This is all best done outside — carve out a perfect spot to place your materials. Then, soak the wreath round with water.
2. Make a plan. Lay out an play where you want to put each succulent. You can see I laid all of mine out on our table outside so I could get an idea of where I wanted them to go.
3. Place your succulents. Once you’ve got a plan, place the succulents into the wreath. Make a small hole in the moss and add one of your succulents. Once the succulent is in place secure it with a topiary pin.
4. Keep going! Continue this until your living succulent wreath is all filled up and beautiful! My plan changed quite a few times so don’t stress if you don’t know exactly where you’ll put each plant. Remember you can always move things around if you need to. I moved things around quite a bit until I got everything just where I wanted it.
5. Let it settle. Once I was done and happy with it, I allowed the succulent wreath to “settle” for a week or two. Lay the wreath flat so the succulents can take hold. This also gives you a chance to water it if you need to. A few of my succulents did die during the settling process so I took them out and replaced them.
6. Hang it! Finally, it was all set to hang on the door! I really love the way this living succulent wreath turned out and I am hoping that it can withstand my toddler’s rigorous door slamming all summer!
What a fabulous idea! Thank you for sharing.
Yours came out beautifully.
