A Classic Songs Playlist Every Kid (And Parent) Should Listen To

Is there anything better than singing classic songs in your car at the top of your lungs? Sometimes, it’s exactly what I need to de-stress after a long day at work. Music can be so therapeutic. It can also be loud, awesome, and totally worth rocking out to!

I’m a music fanatic. I love classic 80’s rock, 90’s r&b, pop songs, alternative, and even some country. I still remember what songs I could play while I was pregnant that would make my son move the most. I’m a firm believer that music should be introduced at an early age.

When I was younger, I loved when my parents would play records, or let me borrow their cassette tapes to listen to my walkman.

Man, I’m really dating myself with this post haha!

Do you remember that scene from the movie Stepbrothers, where Adam Scott’s character and his family sing an over the top version of ‘Sweet Child O’ Mine’? That’s what inspired this post! I also secretly hope when my son is a little bit older that we’ll sing like that on our family trip!

So, I’ve compiled a list of 20 songs that, in my opinion, are classics. They are songs that every child should be able to dance,  sing, or even rock out to in the back seat of your car.

I have so many great memories associated with some of these songs. Singing with my mom in the car on the way to go grocery shopping. My dad blasting classic 80’s music as he painted our house. One of the first CD’s I ever bought: TLC. My best friend (Kristy) and I, singing The Proclaimers at karaoke! Kristy’s mom blaring Bon Jovi in her car as she took us to the mall.

I have attached a link to the Spotify Playlist that I created. Feel free to give it a listen!

I felt it was necessary to begin the list with the exact song that inspired me.

  1. Guns N’ Roses- Sweet Child O’ Mine
  2. Queen- Don’t Stop Me Now
  3. Bon Jovi- Livin’ On A Prayer
  4. Journey- Don’t Stop Believin’
  5. Oasis- Wonderwall
  6. Red Hot Chili Peppers- Give It Away
  7. TLC- Waterfalls
  8. 4 Non Blondes- What’s Up?
  9. *NSYNC- Bye Bye Bye
  10. David Bowie- Let’s Dance
  11. The Outfield- Your Love
  12. No Doubt- Just A Girl
  13. Spice Girls- Wannabe
  14. Will Smith- Getting Jiggy Wit It
  15. Outkast- Hey Ya!
  16. The Proclaimers- I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles)
  17. A-Ha- Take On Me
  18. Justin Timberlake- Rock Your Body
  19. Beastie Boys- Intergalactic
  20. Def Leppard- Pour Some Sugar On Me

So there you have it; 20 songs that I will make sure my son listens to. We already dance together in the car, I can’t wait to have some epic karaoke wars with him! Or air guitar battles!

What classic songs have you/will you make sure your kids love?!

Hello, I'm Rachel! I'm a first time mom who lives in Raymond with my husband Anthony, my mini-me son Harvey, our two crazy cats, and our curious dog. We have a full household! I grew up on the NH Seacoast and spent many of those days hanging out at the beach, running around downtown Portsmouth with friends, or hiking and exploring the coast. I work full time currently as a retail manager, which is where I met my husband. In my free time I continue on my quest to find the best cup of coffee. I've found a few runner-ups, but still can't commit to a number one favorite yet. I love to cook, and spend countless hours searching Pinterest and scouring the internet to search for the perfect meal to cook for my family. I'm so excited to meet other moms as I begin this blogging journey! Follow me on Instagram @bumbling.mama
