Ahhhhh, spring. It makes you want to have a cleaner house, a healthier diet, and hopefully make some positive changes to your lifestyle. What’s more is Earth Day is here and should be a day where we take a look at where we can do better for this place we call home. We’ve got a few easy things you can swap out this Earth Day to lessen your environmental foot print and save you money in the long run. It’s a win win!
Swap your paper towels for Flour Sack Towels
It’s so easy to grab a paper towel for EVERYTHING but did you ever stop to think about what those paper towels are made of? Trees. It is a modern convenience, especially with messy kids around, but all those paper towels add up to a lot of trees. Try swapping them out for flour sack towels. Flour sack towels are reusable, inexpensive, washable, and they dry quickly. They are the best thing I have found to replace paper towels. Here are a few places you can find them – Target, Walmart, Amazon. If it feels like the switch is to big try using paper towels for a few less things. Or maybe just keep a roll on hand for any poop or vomit situations, because we all know crap {and puke} happens.
Coffee Made Environmentally Conscience
As parents there is nothing better than our morning cup or joe but if you are using a Keurig or Nespresso machine you know how many of those coffee pods you are throwing away. If you’re anything like me, one cup of coffee usually doesn’t do it, so that means a whole bunch of plastic is headed for the landfill. Don’t worry there are easy swaps to make! Now, there are reusable pods available for both Keurig and Nespresso machines so now you can have you perfect pick me up without the guilt! Or, go one step further and get compostable pods (for your Nespresso machine). Another pro? You save money in the long run.
If you’re a drip coffee kind of mom think about switching out your coffee filter to a recycled or compostable version.

Swapping out your toxic household cleaners can make both your home healthier, as well as the environment. One of my favorite companies is Seventh Generation and these are the best dishwasher pods I have found so far. I know your thinking, they won’t do as good of a job as your other cleaners but I promise they will! I don’t have the time to mess around with cleaners that don’t work, I promise.
This one may be a no brainer but, by switching your light bulbs to energy-effecient bulbs you use less energy. When you use less energy, you save money. You can learn about the different kinds of light bulbs here or head to you local hardware store and chat up someone who works there.
