Lush For Less: DIY Bath Bombs

Who doesn’t love a good bath?!  As a mom, baths are not something that I would rate as a top priority.  But, Mother’s Day is coming up and it’s time to treat yo’ self!   I have tested and tried a few different recipes, and this one by far is my fave.  The shea butter adds SO much moisture to your bath.  These are also great for the kids, and make great gifts for friends or house guests!  Buying bath bombs from the store can turn into an expensive habit.  So, I broke down the cost of making these on your own at home.  Are you ready for this?  It comes to 42 CENTS each!  

I love doing DIY projects like this with my daughter.  Especially when we do so many painting, cutting, and coloring projects, this is a fun thing to make and also show your kids that not everything needs to be bought from the store!  So, grab your kids, your supplies, and your measuring cups, and make this fun (and rewarding) little project!  

What you’ll need: 

  • 2 cups baking soda
  • 1 cup citric acid (I got this right off amazon)
  • 1/2 cup epsom salt
  • 2 ounces melted shea butter (amazon as well)
  • witch hazel or water
  • 10 drops of essential oil (optional)
  • a mold to put them in until dry (I used a cupcake pan!  But, there are a lot of fun silicone molds you can find on amazon)

Instructions: 

  1. Mix together dry ingredients, breaking up any clumps.
  2. Melt your shea butter, over the stove or in the microwave.
  3. Slowly mix shea butter into dry ingredients, a drizzle at a time.  The slower the better.  You may see the citric acid start to fizz a little.  The more it fizzes now, the less it’ll fizz in the bath!
  4. Put witch hazel or water into a spray bottle.  I like to use witch hazel because I found it fizzes a little less.  Spray dry mixture just a few sprays at a time, using your other hand to mix and squeeze your mixture around.
  5. Keep adding sprays until your mixture keeps its form when you squeeze it into your hand.
  6. Add your mixture into the molds, pushing and packing it down as hard as you can until each mold is full.

These can also be personalized for whoever you are making them for!  I added dried flower petals to the bottoms of each of my molds.  We’ve made some for my daughter before and added tons of glitter to them!  Another variation I have seen is adding Himalayan Sea Salt to give them a pink color.

Along with being fun and easy to make, these bath bombs also have some awesome benefits to them.  The epsom salts that are added are known to ease pain and inflammation and are beneficial for sore muscles, asthma, and even headaches.  It can also help heal wounds and reduce soreness from childbirth.  The shea butter that is added leaves your skin feeling so silky!  If you add Himalayan Sea Salt, it can stimulate circulation, detox your body, relax and destress your muscles, and deep clean your skin. 

Now, go make some of these with your kids!  For Mother’s Day, ask for an hour uninterrupted, grab a good book, and treat yourself to one of these luscious baths!
