Saved By the Bell: An Easy Potty Training Trick That’s Changing My Life

Easy Potty Training Trick

As I write this, my son is running around our living room in only a pair of rainboots and his father’s motorcycle helmet. “Why?”, you ask. Two words…potty training. That means that my day is full of making sure he doesn’t poop on the couch and asking him every 5 minutes if he needs to use the potty.

Obviously I’m living my best life.

All the potty training advice

I’ll be the first to admit that I don’t know what I’m doing. Everyone has their own advice, tips, tricks, dos and don’ts when it comes to the topic of potty training.

Should I reward with food?
Just make it part of his routine?
Should I put him in pull ups?
Should I just let him be naked?

I finally threw out all the advice and decided to navigate this myself. The advice was just noise in my head and I realized I needed to trust myself and my instincts about my own child. I’m so glad I did because, even though we are still in the middle of the potty training chaos, I’ve found a magical trick.

My Easy Potty Training Trick: Ring A Bell

I’m not kidding. We have a “special” bell that sits where he can see but can’t reach it. He knows that if he goes to the bathroom on the potty he gets to ring the bell. He is beside himself with excitement when he can ring it and once he has rung it once using the potty again is a cinch. Having this really simple tool at my fingertips has made potty training much easier. So hop in your car, head to your nearest hardware store, buy the holy grail of bells, and let the potty training begin!

Or, maybe it’s not a bell for your kid. Perhaps it’s stickers, candy, listening to their favorite song or even watching mommy do something silly. Finding that easy potty training trick for your kid means figure out what your kid would enjoy the most. Then, make it the reward for their potty endeavors.

Most of all, I wish you luck Potty training is not for the faint of heart! Trust your instincts, keep or throw out the advice and hang in there. Godspeed.
