Do you have a little fisherman in the family? If you’re like me, your angler reminds you daily that fishing season is in full swing. Many rivers and ponds open for fishing in April and run until October. And since summer is winding down, perhaps you need a new excursion to take the kids to.
Here are three spots that offer something for everyone in the family. Your fishing enthusiast can indulge, and then afterwards, the family fun can continue with picnics, shopping, and more.
Fishing Pick #1: Gilman Park in Exeter NH
This one is perfect for all ages. Tucked away off of Court Street and Bell Avenue, Gilman Park has fishing access on the Exeter River. With its easy bank fishing, you can catch trout, sunfish, pumpkinseed, and more! My son has caught something virtually every single time we have gone here. There are benches, a small sports area, and trails in the woods for hiking. After you’re done, drive down the road into Downtown Exeter, and stroll along the Swasey River, or shop in some of Exeter’s Fine Shops.
Fishing Pick #2: Hilton Park at Dover Point in Dover, NH
Would you like boat access, or simple dock fishing? You can do both at Hilton Park located along the Piscataqua River. A pier provides a safe area with a scenic backdrop, and there are picnic tables, a playground, and beautiful walking paths. While you’re in the area, visit Dover Children’s Museum for some hands-on fun, and stop by Woodman Museum to discover local history. Downtown Dover offers many food and shopping choices to make your day worthwhile.
Fishing Pick #3: Plum Island in Newburyport, MA
If you want to spend the day at the beach, this is the place for you! Plum Island Beach, just minutes from Downtown Newburyport, is truly a gem of the Seacoast. Get out your saltwater rods, keep a safe distance away from the water, and have fun reeling in mackerel and striped bass. Play on the beach afterwards, or visit Parker River National Wildlife Refuge for some truly amazing birdwatching. While in town, be sure to visit Joppa Flats Education Center, where the kids can explore touch tanks, go birding, and more!
