Greenland is a beautiful town on the Seacoast of New Hampshire with a population of 3,866. In Rockingham County, adjacent to Portsmouth, it has easy access to I-95 and is ranked as one of the best places to live in New Hampshire. Living in Greenland offers residents a suburban feel and most residents own their homes. The highly rated public schools draw many families to this great town.

Why Moms Love Greenland

Niche, a national website that researches everything from the best schools to greatest places to work, ranks Greenland the number one town in Rockingham County NH to raise a family.

Greenland feels very suburban, and yet you are just minutes from Portsmouth so you can enjoy all of the restaurants, shopping, theater and amenities a larger town has to offer.

Also, you have easy access (literally a few minutes) to I-95 to get to Boston or Portland, Maine in about one hour. That’s why I LOVE IT!!! You get to live and raise your family in a beautiful, safe and small community environment, but you can easily access all that the larger cities have to offer!

Playgrounds, Parks & Attractions

Greenland has MULTIPLE and REALLY GREAT Sport facilities for your kids…and you!

For such a small town you have so many recreation choices. The Greenland Recreation Department is wonderful, offering great youth sports programs throughout the year. There are several excellent fields, tennis courts and gyms around town — many surrounding towns even utilize our great facilities.

One of the most outstanding parts of living in Greenland is being close to the Great Bay Discovery Center. It’s a great place to take kids for a hike and even works well as toddler-friendly nature walk

Childcare & Schools

Greenland Central School is a highly-rated public school located in Greenland. It has 394 students in grades K-8 with a student to teacher ratio of 13:1. It is a beloved local school, and feeds into Portsmouth High School (which is about 10 minutes away in the next town over).

Weeks library, slated to get a significant expansion soon, is adjacent to the parking lot of Greenland Central School. This beloved library offers free after school programs for students. Walking to the library from school is both easy and safe — it’s a tremendous resource for youth living in Greenland. There are also numerous programs for residents to enjoy, particularly parents of small children

While there are no preschools in Greenland, there are several to choose from in the surrounding towns, quite nearby.

Shops & Restaurants

While Greenland is close to larger towns like Portsmouth with lots of hubbub, there are actually quite a few really good restaurants in Greenland itself. There is The Country View Restaurant, Nik & Charlie’s Pizzeria, Greenland Famous Roast Beef & Seafood and Me & Ollie’s. Additionally, there is no membership required to enjoy a fantastic meal at the two local country clubs’ restaurants (Grill 28 at Pease and The Grille at Portsmouth Country Club). There’s also a Starbucks in Target nearby!

Activities

We couldn’t talk about Greenland without mentioning the gorgeous Golf Clubs! With all the open space, gorgeous courses at Portsmouth Country Club and Breakfast Hill Golf Club have time to shine.

Rolling Green Nursery boasts a winter farmers market several times a year and is also a great place to shop for springtime plants.

If you’re looking to shop local and feed your family really well, Great Bay Farm sells locally raised beef and dairy products nearby.

Greenland also boasts a great library (pictured above) and proximity to Pease Airport (and location of C&J Bus Lines, an easy bus to take to Logan Airport or downtown Boston).

For that small town feel, the Annual Greenland Craft Fair & Pie Sale is one of the largest and longest running Fairs in the Seacoast. It boasts over 500 pies and artisan crafts for sale each November.

Greenland has so much to offer!

Allison’s mission in life is to notice the extraordinary in the ordinary. Her commitment to see beyond what’s in front of her was fostered by her degree in Philosophy and Theology from Boston College. Allison’s a book nerd and credits her parents and inspiring English teachers for her love of reading and writing. She went on to earn her Master in Pastoral Ministry from Boston College and then taught high school for several years, both in New England and San Francisco. After moving from San Francisco to Boston with her engineer husband, she began teaching yoga and working as a social media marketing consultant. Now a Portsmouth resident, she spends most of her days with her three daughters (she does not have enough arms) and does her best to find the bliss amidst the endless snacking, dance parties and tiaras. With all the beautiful chaos in her life, she’s grateful to have her partner-in-crime (husband Charlie) and fellow movie quote enthusiast alongside her. Her passion for writing first drew her to Seacoast Moms as a contributing writer, and her desire to connect moms of the Seacoast with businesses who serve and interest them led her to become SM’s owner. Being able to write about the ordinary grace present in motherhood, while interacting with incredible Seacoast business owners is a dream come true.
